A vivid collection of erotic adventures and musings. I especially liked the part about the pills and the meta nods to the classics. Also, the moment with the magpies was unique and very Australian. First, a warning. This book is not for the timid reader. It contains extreme adult content. This is not a book of poetry that you would buy for your sister or mother, well, unless you have incestuous relationships with them. This is a book of poetry that you might buy for one of your girlfriends that you rent by the hour, you know, just to show her that you have culture and are into poetry, perhaps reading a few of the poems during the 15 to 20 minute recuperation period between all the fun stuff.
The book’s first half is filled with poetry of an extreme sexual nature, of indulgences of all kinds—sex, drugs, alcohol, the underworld nightlife, the “scene”—that many of us sleep through while dreaming about TV commercials or puppies. Roberts writes about the stuff that early morning sirens wake us up to in their response. I sensed extensive amounts of lust and perverted gluttony that self perpetuate in their inability to satiate or satisfy completely, always seeking more, expanding the envelope by thrusting a dick or two inside, while being annoyed with the inevitable ramifications of such behavior. The dark humor of many of the poems left me reading with a wry smirk, stimulated by Roberts’ tongue-in-chick musings.
The second half of Satyr is a novella titled “The Feeding.” This could be the story one might write if one followed Frank Booth around on his escapades that didn’t make it into Blue Velvet. More late night underworld goings on as people try to hold their fractured lives together with the dried spent fluids of last night. Vampire undertones, S&M, B&D, mother-daughter, pick your fetish, it’s likely included. Mine was the version, so the pages don’t stick together.

First off, wow. Be warned this book is hyper-erotic and unforgiving. Break out the fans and throw off the bed sheets; you’re in for one hell of a shocking, sweaty ride.
Drawing from personal experience, James WF Roberts explores the sensual and perverse side of intimacy in well-versed poetry and near flawless prose. At times his raw, ass-slapping honesty takes a reader by surprise, arousing a deeper carnal urge in his audience and leading them into the alleyway (or the subway station men’s room, as in his poem Men’s Room Etiquette) where the ‘real’ shit happens.
Each piece works in tandem, producing a pornographic peep show with the edgy and the everyday, the taboo and the not-so-typical. Exploring an array of fetishes only vaguely reminiscent of Fifty Shades BDSM, Satyr goes further in minute detail so often obscured or avoided in much erotic writing. Mixing the racy and the risqué, extreme pain with passion, Satyr is a hedonistic account of seduction challenging the norm.
Not typically a fan of erotica, I found myself caught up in Roberts’ ability to take the cringe-worthy and make it praise-worthy, intriguing, and even humorous at times. His adventures and misadventures will appeal to not only the avid erotica fan, but those who long to push the sexual envelope, preferring to explore the kinky side one step removed.
